2 killed in firecracker explosion in Tarn Taran

In a tragic incident, two people were killed in a firecracker explosion in Punjab’s Tarn Taran Sahib on February 8. Around nine others also sustained critical injuries. The explosion took place during a Nagar Kirtan (religious procession) which was taken out near Pahu village in Tarn Taran district to celebrate the birth anniversary of Baba Deep Sing.

The explosion was caused after sparks from firecrackers landed on a trolley containing a huge pile of firecrackers. Initial reports stated that around 15 people had died. Later, a detailed investigation rejected such reports and concluded that only two people had lost their lives. The police have found nothing suspicious about the incident and called the tragedy an accident. Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has expressed deep regret on the incident and has announced an ex-gratia of rupees 5 lakh for kin of deceased and free treatment for those who are injured.
