23 kids held hostage in Farrukhabad

Around twenty-three children were rescued on Thursday hours after they were held hostage by a man at Kasaria village in Farrukhabad district, Uttar Pradesh. The kids aged between 6 months and 15 years were invited by the culprit to his house on the false pretext of his daughter’s birthday celebration. The kids were then locked up in the basement of the house and held hostage before the suspect was killed by the police.

The suspect, Subhash Batham was a murder convict who was out on bail. The hostage situation began in the afternoon and continued for about 9 hours. Angry neighbors started pelting stones at the suspect’s house while he held the kids hostage. According to the police, Batham had released a girl and handed her over to the neighbors. The motive behind this act was not known initially and also, no demands were made.

A team of National Security Guard (NSG) was flown to Farrukhabad to assess the situation. The police reported that the suspect carried a gun and fired on anyone who tried to talk to him. He also threw low-intensity grenades to prevent the police from coming close to the house. Later at night, the police along with the commandos stormed the house and an exchange of fire took place with the suspect. One local and two police personnel were injured while the suspect was shot dead in the encounter. The police recovered a large cache of guns and gun powder from the suspect’s house. All twenty-three children were rescued safe and sound.
