24-hour token strike of Ola & Uber drivers Union in Kochi

The joint action council of various online taxi drivers’ unions working for Ola & Uber held a 24-hour token strike in Kochi, Kerala on November 12.
The strike was called over several demands including commission charged by the online aggregator.
The strike started from Monday morning, which had the participation of all the drivers’ union, including Online Drivers Union(ODU), Kerala Samsthana Motor Thozhilali Union (KSMTU), National Safety Council (NSC),  Online Taxi Driver’s Union (OTDU), JMTU, Online Cab Drivers Association (OCDA) and SEDA. No online cab services were available from midnight of November 12 for a period of 24 hours. During the strike, the taxi drivers were seen chanting slogans. Due to this 24- hour token strike the normal life was hit. Commuters were facing several issues while travelling as the Ola and Uber services were on hold.
According to the sources, firms such as Uber and Ola charge commission rates above 26% for every trip, however, the online drivers are struggling to find a fund for paying their monthly installments.
