4 killed and 10 injured after a wall collapsed in Dhenkanal

Four killed and Ten injured after a boundary wall of an abandoned rice mill collapsed near a weekly market in Dhenkanal district, Odisha on June 9 around 8.45 in the morning.
Fire tenders along with a team of the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) were present on the spot. Police officials, as well as the concerned authorities, were also present on the incident spot.
According to the sources, when the fire tenders were informed about this incident they immediately rushed to the spot. Meanwhile, the police officials also took charge of the incident spot and with the help of ODRAF team removed the debris and rescued the people who were trapped under the debris. The injured people were immediately rushed to the nearby hospital for necessary treatment, in which four were declared dead.
The vendors who were sitting beside the wall revealed that they heard a loud noise and later came to see that people have been covered with the debris of the wall after the wall suddenly caved in and fell on the street. The people present there immediately informed the fire tenders and police officials.
The two-wheeler’s and bicycles which were parked under the wall were crushed.
The wall of D Hansaraj Rice Mill was old and in a dilapidated condition. As it had been weakened, the locals earlier complained about the poor condition of the wall but authorities didn’t pay any attention and ignored this plea.
After the rescue operation, the district administration has demolished the remaining portion of the wall and some abandoned houses inside the rice mill premises with the help of a JCB machine, sources added.
According to the officials, An enquiry has been conducted and accordingly notices will be served to all the parties and necessary action will be taken, and all the sub-standard walls will be demolished.

Note: The rice mill is owned by D Hansaraj and has been lying unused for several years. Since the mill has been abandoned, there is no maintenance of the mill and its infrastructure.
