On October 10 during the morning time, six coaches of New Farakka Express train derailed 50m from Harchandpur railway station in Rae Bareli city of Uttar Pradesh. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams from Lucknow and Varanasi along with the railway staff were rushed to the spot to conduct the rescue operation as soon as the incident was reported. Doctors rushed to the site of the incident and the injured were shifted to the nearby hospital for necessary treatment. 7 people were killed while 36 were injured in this mishap.
A special train and buses were arranged for the people who were stranded at Rae Bareli because of this incident. Heavy duty gas cutters were used to extricate the bodies trapped in the damaged coaches. Drones and long-range cameras were also used to monitor the situation. In the meanwhile, five trains were cancelled/ shortly terminated while movement of nine trains was diverted following the train derailment. Various helpline numbers were made available to the public for queries during this period to provide necessary help.
Expressing condolences over the loss of lives, Railways minister Piyush Goyal ordered an enquiry into the accident to be conducted by the commission of railway safety. UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced Rs 2 lakh compensation for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for those seriously injured. This incident was one of the most horrific train accident which shook the people as many lost their lives and others were injured.
