Explosion at Neyveli Lignite Corporation plant in Tamil Nadu’s Cuddalore; 8 seriously injured

A huge blast had occurred at a plant of NLC (Neyveli Lignite Corporation Limited) India Limited in Tamil Nadu’s Cuddalore district on May 7.

NLC India Limited (Neyveli Lignite Corporation Limited) (NLC) is a ‘Navratna’ government of India Company in the fossil fuel mining sector in India and thermal power generation. Neyveli is a mining and power generation township in the Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu. A large portion of Thermal power generated in Tamil Nadu comes from Neyveli. The town of Neyveli is also famous for its goat herding industry. NLC India has five pithead Thermal Power Stations in India.

This massive explosion took place at the thermal plant. Sudden chaos occurred when an explosion broke out at the spot. The relief and rescue teams of NLC India Limited had reached the spot. Workers called to the local police station, and fire department. 5 fire tenders along with an ambulance reached the site. Top NLC officers also reached the spot immediately. Unfortunately, 8 contractual workers were injured in Lignite mining and power-generation plant. The injured were shifted to a private hospital for treatment in Tiruchirappalli city.

The fire resulting from the blast caused serious burn injuries to two contract workers and wounded six others. The blast that occurred at the sixth unit of the NLC India Thermal Power Station-II, in the evening. The power station was 84-meter high and at the time of the accident workers and technicians were at a height of about 32 meters in the area. The power generation was stopped during the mishap. The situation brought under control after a few hours.  Operations at the plant were temporarily suspended after this incident. The fire tenders faced difficulties while fighting the flame due to the smoke. But, they soon took the situation under control and after a lot of effort, the fire was doused off. The impact of the incident was so moderate.
