A 117-year-old church in Shillong caught fire on November 17 at around 4 am. Two people died due to suffocation caused by the billowing smoke formed by the blaze. As soon as the incident was reported three fire tenders rushed to the spot to douse off the flames. As the church was located in a residential area people faced breathing issue due to the smoke.
The fire brigade officials faced difficulties while reaching the spot as the road leading towards the church was very narrow. It took a lot of effort for the fire tenders to douse off the flames. The church was damaged badly, however, the parts of it turned into ashes.
According to the sources, an eyewitness revealed that repairing work was in process inside the church included electrical wiring works which might have been the cause for the tragic flame.
Furthermore, sources also revealed that the couple who died in this incident went inside their house to bring out their valuables couldn’t manage to come out of their house.
The police officials are investigating in this matter and are trying to find the exact cause behind the blaze. However, the actual reason for this incident is yet ascertained.
