A Level 4 fire broke out in Mumbai’s GST Bhavan; none hurt

Nowadays many fire incidents are happening in Mumbai from last few months. This is also one of them. A level 4 fire broke out on the top floors of the ground plus eight-storied Goods and Services Tax (GST) Bhavan at Byculla on Maharana Pratap chowk in Mazgaon of South Mumbai on February 17 at around 12.30 pm.

Thick clouds of smoke billowed out of the upper two floors.  Around 3,500 employees were evacuated safely from the area. People on the ninth floor were also evacuated by firefighters and PWD officials. The local police team, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officers, 20 fire tenders, 9 jumbo water tankers, ambulances,  two turntable ladders and NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) team reached the spot immediately. Around 120 firefighters battled for almost 3 hours to douse the flames, which started on the ninth floor of the 10-storey government-owned building.  The fire brought under control by 3.30 pm. Office staff tried to douse the fire but it spread quickly to the seventh and tenth floor.  The reason behind fire is to be ascertained. Renovation work was carried out in the building. The electricity supply of a building was cut for precautionary measures. The cooling work was carried out till late in the evening. Fortunately, no one was injured in this tragedy. Three floors were totally damaged in this fire. Some important documents were also destroyed.

After this mishap, the government ordered to demolition and repair work of the building. Many of the employees had relocated to the MTNL building in the area. Deputy Chief officers also reached the spot after this incident took place.
