A four storey under-construction building (mall) collapsed in Kumareshwar Nagar of Dharwad, about 400 kilometers north of Bengaluru, Karnataka in the afternoon at 3:40 pm on Tuesday, March 19. Around 55 people were trap under the debris. 15 people injured in this mishap and they shifted to the Civil hospital for treatment. Total 14 people killed while 62 rescued from the debris. Rescue operation was going on for four days. Rescue team, five fire tenders, Chief of Fire, 80 fire officers, emergency services, 150 police, the Director General of Police (DGP), 20 ambulances, the State Disaster Response Force and 11 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) along with specialized equipment like breathing apparatus, life detectors were rushed to the spot to control the situation as soon as possible. NDRF team pressed into service, two from Ghaziabad and one from Bengaluru.
In this mishap, some people were stuck under the rubble area in the building. Some people trapped under the ground floor. There were five floors in the building, including a basement and a ground floor. Officials started rescue operations on Tuesday evening to locate the people trapped under the debris. The operations continued on Wednesday morning. Huge traffic caused in the area after this tragedy. Traffic officials rushed on the spot to manage the traffic of the city. Some routes diverted and some roads closed during this rescue operation. Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy also visited the site and announced compensation to the victims. An FIR was registered on Friday, March 22 against five people and building owner and his partners under section 304 (punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the IPC. Seven corporations were suspended due to this negligence.
