Two people died while 20 others injured after a Volvo bus fell into a gorge on Agra-Lucknow Expressway on Jan 13

At least two people died while 20 others injured in a tragic bus accident due to dense fog on Agra-Lucknow Expressway on early morning of January 13. The Volvo bus of UPSRTC reportedly fell into a 20 feet deep gorge 3 km away from the toll plaza on expressway near Fatehabad. Police and UPEIDA employees were immediately rushed to the spot after receiving information about this accident. The injured passengers were shifted to SN medical college for treatment.

This accident happened around 6.50 am on Monday at Sikrara turn under Fatehabad police station in Agra district. A multi-axle Volvo bus of the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation, carrying 35 to 40 passengers from Agra, was heading to Lucknow. There was a blanket of thick fog due to which the bus driver couldn’t spot a broke down truck parked on the extreme right lane of expressway. The bus driver took a quick turn to avoid collision of the bus with truck. But unfortunately, the bus collided with road divider and fell into the gorge near milestone ’18.6’. Two people were died on the spot while 20 others received injuries. Two of the injured passengers were in critical condition whereas, 10 of them were discharged after first aid.

Sources further indicated that the goods truck was lying on the same spot since Sunday (January 12) night and was not removed from the expressway. The Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) informed that the truck could not be removed as their cranes were busy in two other accidents. Meanwhile, the bus driver claimed that he was driving between 40-50 kmph but due to dense fog he could not see the stationary truck and took a quick turn resulting in the accident.

The traffic movement was affected on the expressway following this mishap. Rescue teams including Police and UPEIDA employees reached within 15 minutes of the bus accident and started rescue operation.
