A hanging bridge collapsed in the state of Gujarat on October 30

An unfortunate incident took place during the evening hours of October 30, after a 230m long hanging bridge (built at around the 1880s by the local Maharaja, Waghji Thakore) spanning the Machchu river connecting Darbargarh Palace and Lakhdhirji Engineering College suddenly collapsed in the city of Morbi, Gujarat. The tragic incident occurred at around 7 pm after it was overcrowded. According to the reports, on the particular day several families, groups of friends, and individuals visited the spot to enjoy the unique features of the bridge and the view from it.
The cable bridge was reopened on October 26,2022 after undergoing maintenance work for eight months. It was prescribed that the bridge can hold a capacity of around 150-200 people, yet, more than 650 tickets were sold on the same day. Over 350 people fell into the river after the bridge collapsed. This situation raised a wave of panic among the locals in the area. The rescue team were soon deployed to the spot after receiving the information regarding the horrendous situation.
Teams of Army, Navy, Air Force, NDRF and Fire Brigade soon rushed to the spot for rescue and relief operations with advanced equipment from Rajkot, Jamnagar, Diu and Surendranagar. More than 200 people including the locals of the area conducted search operation throughout the night to find the victims who fell into the river and were injured in this incident. Moreover, 40 doctors from various health centres including Rajkot PDU Hospital and Surendranagar Civil Hospital started emergency treatment of the injured at Morbi Civil Hospital.
As per reports, 141 people died in this horrifying incident. Furthermore, a criminal case has also been registered in connection with the incident and 9 people have been arrested so far.
