Around 50 godowns gutted in a major fire at Chamunda Complex in Bhiwandi on October 15
A major fire was erupted in a furniture godown located at Chamunda Complex in Kasheli area of Bhiwandi, Thane district on October 15. The flames were so intense that it spread further and gutted around 40-50 other godowns in the area. Fire brigade had deployed several fire tenders to contain the flames. No casualty was reported in this mishap however, the material worth crores of rupees was gutted in the flames. Fire brigade took more than seven hours to completely extinguish the fire.
The fire had started around 11 pm at the Mahalaxmi Furniture market located near Kasheli toll plaza on Bhiwandi-Thane Road. The flames quickly spread to the adjoining godowns and destroyed around 40-50 of these units in the incident. After being informed, local police and a team of Thane Regional Disaster Management Cell were rushed to the spot. One jumbo water tanker from Balkum fire brigade Thane, one fire tender of Bhiwandi fire brigade, four private water tankers and one ambulance were deployed at the spot to carry out firefighting operation.
Exact cause of fire could not be ascertained immediately however, it is suspected that the fire was ignited due to electric short circuit. Firefighters worked hard for more than 7 hours to control the blaze. This incident incurred the loss of crores of rupees as the godowns were completely destroyed in this mishap. There were some workers inside the affected structures when the incident happened and all managed to escape safely.
